Bala Mohammed, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the election by beating the sitting governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar. Meanwhile, Fifty members of the Bauchi Lawyers of Conscience (BOBALAC), have announced their decision to defend the winner of the governorship election in Bauchi state, Senator Bala Mohammed. The decision of the lawyers to defend the governor-elect reportedly followed the alleged resolution of Abubakar to challenge the victory at the tribunal. Thethronemedia.com earlier reported on Friday April 5, that the APC hires 4 SANs to challenge the opposition PDP in court over the latter’s victory.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that the lawyers said the move by the sitting governor to challenge the victory of Mohammed after conceding defeat and even congratulating the winner, shows a level of insincerity. “Having initially conceded and congratulated Kauran Bauchi, knowing fully well that, that is the wish of the people, Mr Abubakar should have sticked to his words. That is how statesmen behave. “In fact, we welcome the development as it will afford us yet another opportunity to use our God-given skills to defend the people’s mandate as given to the governor-elect, Kauran Bauchi. “In doing this, we convey our assurances to his excellency, the governor-elect and indeed the people of Bauchi state that we are deploying the services of not less than 50 counsels, which include some very senior colleagues and successfully tested hands to compliment the efforts of the legal team to be assembled to defend the people’s mandate in terms of the impending election petition to be filed by Governor Abubakar,” the group said.
